I have been known to be the queen of the 5-minute meal, being a mom of a large family – when kids are hungry and the goal is ‘feed them!’ And I have often found myself having only 5 minutes or so around the kitchen table to bring in an appetizer of the word of God, desiring to bring about a hunger for each of them to ‘eat’ more of the word and ‘drink’ of it’s milk as well when they are alone.
That is a mama’s heart. We are the one’s that God put in our hearts to nourish the children – body, mind and soul. “Have you eaten yet?” These are often words from the mama. And it’s a mam’s job to make sure the children know their way ‘home!’
So today, we begin a little daily reading from now until until Christmas – a 5 minute meal in the word!
We are approaching Thanksgiving. We have read in our American History that the Pilgrims and the Indians gathered together to give thanks. And there had been a lot of hardship, and there had been a lot of sickness and many children and mamas and papas had died. Oh yes, they were a testimony to His word: ‘outside there were conflicts and inside there were fears, but nevertheless GOD who comforts the downcast, comforted us…” (2 Cor. 7:6). Those who survived through a long winter, chose to have a time to give thanks to God who had comforted the downcast and kept them alive!
Yes, so today, even though life is very difficult and challenging on this earth, we are encouraged to ‘set our minds on things above, not on things of the earth, for you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.’ (Col 3:2). You’re thinking, “I didn’t die, Jesus did.” And that is true, but we must remember that when we believed on Jesus as our Savior – He took away our sin! All of them and He takes them so far away that they cannot be found:
He has told us in Is. 44:22, “I have blotted out, like a think cloud, your transgressions, and like a cloud, your sins. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.”
And He has also told us that, “So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; As far as the east if from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalm 103:11,12).
To think, God has ‘blotted out’ our sins, like a big ugly mistake on a paper and He uses the ‘white out’ on them so they are no longer there! God wants us to know that our sins are gone, as far as the east is from the west! Yes, and He even tells us that our sins are cast into the depths of the sea. ‘Nevertheless God who comforts the downcast, comforts us’ as well – today!
The prophet Micah asks, “Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy…You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” Micah 7:18,19).
So today, we can chew on this good news and truly say with a depth of meaning, “Praise the LORD! O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His mercy endures forever.” Psalm 106:1.
And perhaps we will end our family reading with this verse Amplified, “Praise the Lord! – Hallelujah! O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure for ever!”
Praise the Lord, Hallelujah! Forever is… a long time! We can give thanks today, no matter what!
